Yes, it may just be the distance. The distances separating us from sny life forms advanced enough to communicate with us is a HUGE factor. So huge it may well be the only one needed. If you assume that faster than light speed travel is either impossible or at least not achievable by any other civilization in our cosmologically immediate vaccinity, then there you have it, and there is indeed no paradox.
